There
is an urgent need for us - media makers who are concerned
with the state of our world - to meet, share ideas
and develop strategies in order to be more effective
in exposing truth, increasing awareness and distributing
information which will lead to a more sustainable,
peaceful and equal way of life.
Media-makers
include all of those who are using all types of tactics
and mediums to communicate messages that lead to a
better mental and physical environment. Those who
use video, stickers, audio, posters, spray cans, the
net, satellite, leaflets, subversion and all the other
mediums are all included. Media-making is about expressing
the way you feel - and that just about covers everyone!
It
is often important to meet physically -
in the flesh. We form an 'alternate' media culture
that is marginalised and ignored by the mainstream
and the sanctioned fringe. We need to support each
other and foster our culture. We need to exchange
knowledge, and improve our skills, techniques and
tactics.
It
is important to stress that we need to include all
people concerned with the current state of affairs
- and feel helpless to do anything.
A number of distributed and autonomous Media Circus
events will happen during September and October of
1999 in Australia. Each event is organised by different
people and cater to different needs. It is hoped that
somehow a sort of integration will happen - and the
different people will talk with each other to maximisie
our effectiveness.
The
history of the Media Circus is brief. It does not
have a direct past. In early 1999, a few people determined
that there was a need to create a space which brought
together like-minded media makers and pursued to create
one. Inspiration for the Media Circus comes from events
such as The Next Five
Minutes and Expo
Destructo. The Media Circus has no planned future
- except in digial space where meetings and exchanges
can continue. However - this does not mean another
'physical' Media Circus won't happen again in the
future.
The
name 'Media Circus' and its purpose does not belong
to any one. It can be re-configured to suit different
needs. It is encouraged for others to organise physical
events that bring us together so we can re-evaluate
our media strategies and develop new techniques and
ways in which to disable the illusion and engage the
reality.
