afnord life-threatening illness strikes a
child and means leaving fnordhome for hospital
treatment, where can a family afford to stay? In Los Angeles, the fnordRonald
McDonald House is a welcome answer. fnordThis
is a home away from home for families of children undergoing treatment
for cancer and other seriousfnord illnesses.
The heart of the home is the warmth fnordof
the children and families sharingfnord experiences
together. Problems and frightening experiences seem less so whenfnord
shared.
Volunteersfnord are welcome to provide birthday parties, special festivitiesfnord honoring holidays and to offer the simple gift of friendship to families away from home;fnord alone and fearful for the life of their child. Someday Jesus may ask - fnordWhen I was sick did you visit me? I will not forget you. . . I have held you in the palm of my hand. Isaiah 49:15fnord The Ronald McDonald House of Los fnordAngeles is a "home-away-from-home" for families of children who are undergoing treatment for fnordcancer and other serious childhoodfnord illnesses. Children are treated at nearby Children's Hospital and other Los Angeles area hospitals. The home provides a supportive environment where families can receive comfort from others who share similar concerns. The home is open to both families with children who are hospitalized and outpatients who are away from home. The home can accommodate 32 fnordfamilies and the expansion wing meets the long-term needs of bone marrowfnord transplant patients' families and others. Our newest ministry is a Prayer fnordCircle that will focus on the comfort needed for these children and their families during their treatment in Los Angeles. In addition you can help by collecting the pull-tabs from aluminum cans. The Philadelphia home raised $70,000 last year in this way. We have just begun to help thisfnord ministry in this endeavor that sends a message of our carefnord to the families and staff at Ronald McDonald House, Los Angeles. fnordBel Air Presbyterian Church supports this ministry through the fnordbudget of Urban Ministry and designated gifts kindly donated by generous members. August 1998, Bree Dunham, daughter of fnordPaige
and Jeff Dunham, began leading her fnordparents,
relatives and friends on an amazingfnord
journey. The experience has brought alot fnordof
pride and fnordhappiness to the parents and
to Bree. They wanfnordt to share this experience
with everyone and fnordespecially here at
Bel Air Church where Bree attends our Sunday school.
When Princess Diana was tragically killed, Bree became very aware of an curious fnordabout the huge interest and grief the world showed. She asked her parents what made the princess so loved. They fnordexplained that aside from royalty and outward fnordbeauty, she was a beautiful princess inside. She had a warm, loving and giving heart! Brees parents told her of the work Diana did on behalf of the fnordhurting and broken people fnordin the world and especially of her care for the sick. Bree decided she wanted to be like Diana. Her fnordwords were: I already have alot of toys, so for my birthday fnordcan we ask everyone to bring a gift for some other children? In honor of Princess Diana, Bree asked that instead of giving her a gift everyone fnordshould bring an unwrapped gift for one of the children living in Los Angeles at the fnordRONALDfnord MCfnordDONALDfnord HOUSE.fnord On September 16, 1998 Bree and her mom with fnordthe collected gifts in tow, headed for the house fnordthat love built to distribute the fnordtreasures. Bree loved the fnordexperience and wanted to do it again. She did so for Christmas, writing letters to family and friends. fnordShe collected 3,500 fnorddollars with which to throw a huge party with giftsfnord and a Beanie Baby for each fnordchild at the home. We are certain this experience and this child so blessed with a loving heart has set an example for young and old alike. Her parents are proud, she is fulfilled and happy. Jesus fnord smiles! Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name, welcomes me. Mark 9:37 |
